Hey, this is Joel from WorldSpanishTeacher.com. In this lesson, I want to talk about a couple ways you can use the word “mismo.”
Now, “mismo” means “same” – such as “the same car” – “el mismo carro” or “the same house” – “la misma casa.” And it’s usually going to change according to gender. So when you’re using it with a masculine word, you say “mismo” and with a feminine word you say, “misma.”
I want to emphasize a couple expressions, you could say, with the word “mismo.” Now, you can say “hoy mismo,” which means “this very day.” We don’t really say it like that in English. So in Spanish when we say “hoy mismo,” you’re emphasizing TODAY, this very day – not tomorrow, not in 2 days, but today.
“Quiero que vengas hoy mismo” – “I want you to come today”
Alright, simple enough. Another way is “mañana mismo” which is the same idea, but you’re emphasizing tomorrow.
So, I could say, “Necesito ir a la embajada mañana mismo” – “I need to go to the embassy tomorrow”
Now, although “mañana” is feminine, we’re going to say “mismo” after it – not “misma.” Just think of it as an idiomatic expression or a fixed expression. It’s not going to change. So, “mañana mismo” – not “mañana misma.”
